Where’s My State Refund?

How to check the status of your state tax return

There aren’t many things in life that can make you miss the IRS but dealing with your state tax authority is definitely one of them. As byzantine as the federal tax code is, the IRS actually does a pretty good job of providing useful information on its website.

The same cannot be said of the forty-one tax authorities (nine lucky states have no income tax) responsible for administering their state’s income tax.

Trying to get any information out of a state tax website can be a frustrating experience. Most look like relics from the 1990s and they definitely did not have user-friendliness in mind when they were designed.

And yet you still need to know where the heck your state tax refund is. To make your life a little easier we’ve compiled a list of where to check your state tax refund for every state that has an income tax. Click on the link and it should take your right to the necessary page of your state’s tax website.

To make filing your state taxes even simpler, remember to do it on RapidTax next year.

  1. I filed April 13th at the same time that my Mom did and she has already gotten her return. Our mail person has been putting the wrong mail in our boxes lately so checking status of my refund. Thanks for your help in this matter.

    1. For your safety and for security, please do not provide your personal information through comments or over a website that does not have a secure means of communication. Unfortunately at this point we cannot assist you on the whereabouts of your refund. You will need to contact the IRS if you’re missing your Federal refund or your State offices. The IRS main call line is 1-800-829-1040. You will need to find your state department of revenue contact information and get in touch with them for your State refund.

    1. Hi Donna,
Did you file with RapidTax? If so, you can call us (or live-chat us) directly and one of our tax experts will help you learn the status of your return. You can also log in to your account and view your status page. If you did not file with us, I suggest either contact your state taxation department or whoever prepared your return for you.

  2. I mailed my return in early April & have checked the website multiple times & it always says it has no information. My Federal return was deposited in my account 4 wks after I mailed it out. Why is it taking SOOO long to get my state return?
